The Penlee lifeboat disaster occurred on 19 December off the coast of lifeboat Solomon Browne, based at the Penlee Lifeboat Station near Mousehole, went to the aid of the vessel Union Star after its engines failed in heavy seas.

The Penlee disaster was the last time Britain’s lifeboat service lost an entire crew in action. The Solomon Browne had been in service 21 years, its crew saving 91 lives.

The site is situated in a sheltered position along the seafront on the beautiful shores of Mounts Bay giving all the caravans magnificent sea views from Penzance and St Michaels Mount round to the Lizard.
